The reviews had stopped. Then thirty-six in a quarter.

Platinum is the good salon in a town of three thousand people — a decade of families in the same chairs. But in the summer of 2025 it got zero new Google reviews. A year later it got 36 in the same three months, and half again as many people a month were calling, asking for directions or clicking through from Google.

Our role
The website and Google. We run the site, the Google listing and the local search. Renee and her team run the salon.

01The challenge

What they were up against.

In a town of three thousand there is no search volume to buy. Nobody wins Smithsburg by outspending the salon down the road. The map is the market, and a reputation that stops being added to goes quiet on the map — however good it was.

Platinum is the full-service salon in Smithsburg, Maryland — hair, nails, lashes, waxing, tanning and massage, under one roof, in a town of about three thousand people. Renee owns it, and some of her stylists have been doing the same families’ hair for a decade. We run the website and the local search.

02Strategy & approach

The play, and why this one.

Platinum didn’t have a reputation problem. It had a reputation nobody could see: hundreds of five-star reviews built one client at a time, sitting on a Google listing and doing no work anywhere else. So the order mattered — own the home town outright first, then put the reviews to work where people would actually read them, and only then go looking at the towns next door.

  1. 01Be first for the salon’s own town and its own name, every time — the floor everything else is built on.
  2. 02Get the reviews flowing again, steadily, not in a burst.
  3. 03Put the reviews on the website with names and dates, so a referral can check the stylist they were told about.
  4. 04Then reach past the town line toward Thurmont and Hagerstown.

How it played out.

01

Own the home town outright first.

In a town of three thousand you cannot afford to be second for your own name or your own zip code. “Hair salon Smithsburg” shows Platinum at the top of the page, every time. A surprising number of small-town salons never get that, and everything else is built on it.

02

The reviews came back, and kept coming.

Thirty-six new five-star reviews in May, June and July, against none at all in the same months the year before — and not one burst either. They land steadily, month after month, and the salon now sits at 269 reviews with a clean 5.0 average.

03

Then we put the reputation somewhere it does work.

Fifty reviews on the home page and again on the team page, with the names, the dates and the full text — not a star and a number. It matters that they’re specific. Somebody who has been told “go and see Mandi” arrives on the site and finds Mandi, in a stranger’s words, with a date on it.

How fast it happened

The reviews came back in September 2025 and have landed every month since. The map followed a few months behind, the way it does: by summer 2026 the calls, direction requests and clicks from Google were up by half on the year before, and the searches showing Platinum on page one had nearly doubled.

What it meant for the business

Platinum was already the good salon in Smithsburg. What changed is that people who had never sat in one of its chairs can now find that out — 269 five-star reviews doing work on the map and on the website, and 340 more people a quarter calling, asking for directions or clicking through from Google. In a town this size, that isn’t a marketing campaign. That’s a reputation finally being allowed to travel.

06Lessons & takeaways

What this means for your salon.

01

In a small town, the map is the market

There’s no search volume to buy in a town of three thousand. What decides who gets found is the Google listing — and the listing runs on reviews. Keep them coming and the map does the rest.

02

A reputation nobody can see isn’t working

Platinum had hundreds of five-star reviews sitting on Google and doing nothing on its own site. Putting them where a referral can read them, with names and dates, turns word of mouth into something a stranger can check.

03

Own your town before you chase the next one

Hagerstown is twenty minutes away and many times the size. Platinum only started appearing there once Smithsburg was locked down. Get the home town first; the reach follows.

What we’d do differently

Start the review work a season earlier. The drought had been building through the spring before we turned it around in the autumn, and every month of a quiet listing is a month the map forgets you a little. We’d treat a slowing review count as the first alarm, not the last.

Your business could bethe next one here.

Every case study on this page started the same way. A discovery call, a custom plan, and a team that actually executes.
