A template logo.Now it’s on the hats.

Wolfhaven opened on Wilshire Boulevard with a domain nobody had built on and a logo a friend had promised to design. What came back was an off-the-shelf template. We rebuilt the identity from scratch, unbilled — two directions, one call, one revision — and eight months later Marcus asked whether they owned it outright, because they wanted to put it on hats to sell in the salon.

01The challenge

What they were up against.

The website couldn’t start until there was an identity to design around, so the whole launch sat behind one unfinished file. And the file that arrived set the name as three words when the brand is one, with crossed razors and a ribbon banner — a mark that could have belonged to anyone.

Marcus and Rebecca Wolf opened Wolfhaven Hair on Wilshire Boulevard with a clear picture of the room they wanted and almost none of the brand that would fill it — a domain nobody had built on, and a logo a friend had promised to deliver.

02Strategy & approach

The play, and why this one.

The brief was never “fix the logo”. It was “give this salon an identity it can actually own”. Salon branding is a specific audience problem, and a generalist doesn’t solve it by accident — so rather than patch a template, we started over, showed two honest directions side by side, and let the owners choose with their eyes open.

  1. 01Start from zero rather than patch a template.
  2. 02Present two real directions — a literal mark and a bold wordmark — and expect one to lose.
  3. 03Match the brand colour to the actual paint on the salon wall.
  4. 04Settle the identity first, then let it drive the website.
03What we did

Two services, one identity.

All our services

The website

Built once the identity was settled, so every page carries it — the wordmark, the wall pink, the whole look. Launched in October.

04Execution

How it played out.

01

Two directions, and we expected one to lose.

A literal wolf mark alongside a bold typographic wordmark. Marcus ruled out the obvious one himself — “with the wolf, it does feel more like a high school mascot” — and picked the type. Both concepts were approved on the call. His next question was how soon he could put it on Instagram.

The friend’s draft — an off-the-shelf template
02

One revision, and the colour came off the wall.

The only change requested was the pink: a touch more blush. Marcus sent the swatch from the paint in the salon, and we matched the brand pink to it rather than approximate it. It’s the same pink behind the sign in the room today.

Then the identity drove the website.

With the mark settled, design led the build — the look was signed off first, then carried out across every page. The aesthetic was approved in September and wolfhavenhair.com launched that October.

What it meant for the business

Eight months after the reveal, on a routine status call, Marcus asked whether they owned the logo outright — because he and Becca wanted to put it on baseball hats and beanies to sell in the salon. They do, entirely: the mark, the site, all of it. Nobody prints merchandise of a logo they merely tolerate.

The logo's one — it's my favorite part about it, because it just looks so professional, and it's very us, and people like it.

06Lessons & takeaways

What this means for your brand.

01

A favour is not a brand

A working designer who doesn’t know salons will hand you something interchangeable. Salon branding is its own problem, and it deserves someone who solves it on purpose.

02

Settle the identity before the website

Wolfhaven’s site couldn’t start until there was a mark to design around. Get the identity right first and the build goes faster and lands better.

03

The test of a logo is whether they’d wear it

Eight months on, the owners wanted it on hats. That is the only brand review that matters.

What we’d do differently

Ask for the paint swatch on the first call. The colour that made the identity theirs was on the salon wall the whole time, and getting it up front would have made the one revision unnecessary.

Other turnarounds.
